A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
